Youth Climate Action Event – Make a Move

Saturday, September 28th, 2024 on National Public Lands Day in Old Town Square, Fort Collins

Community Service Projects 9-12pm, Civic Engagement and Job Fair 12-3pm

.

At the 3nd annual Youth Climate Action event you can be one of 75 local youths between the ages of 15-25 to participate in various service-learning projects that connect you with nature & teach you about the power of giving back to community.

In the afternoon we’ll gather back in Old Town Square where youth speakers will share their experiences with environmental preservation, environmental justice, outdoor equity & civic engagement. There will be a career fair & we’ll help you create an Action Plan to guide your environmental efforts at school, at home, and in the community.

This next-generation climate awareness event is youth-developed, youth-driven, and youth-led. Sign Up TODAY!

ACT ON IT- GIVE BACK BY PARTICIPATING IN A COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

• Environmental Preservation – River Cleanup, Raptor Program and Natural Areas Maintenance
• Food Security – Working with “pay as you can” Food Pantries, Cafe’s & Community Gardens

TALK ABOUT IT – ENGAGE WITH LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIALS ON THE ISSUE OF CLIMATE CHANGE

• Listen – To local youths talk about Outdoor Equity and Environmental Protection.
• Ask – What you can do to influence policy or get involved with local politics.
• Learn – How to talk about climate change with others by utilizing our free e-book, “Communicating Climate“.

Nadia Brooks, Environmental Learning for Kids

Title: Are we Not Exceptional?

Description: The talk is about how we have made many amazing advancements in our society that has led to a comfortable and exciting world.  Yet in our comfortability, we have grown complacent in our expectations of ourselves as a people. If we have done all these amazing things, then why does it seem so impossible to keep going in a sustainable manner. Are we not exceptional enough to change and evolve to conserve our environment instead of consume?  I will then speak about how we can take action towards that more sustainable life.

Bio: An aspiring poet who seeks creativity in all forms imaginable. Her goal is to understand the environment to be able to protect it as much as she can.

Lindsey Garchar (they/them/elle), The Growing Project

Title: Food Sovereignty in Fort Collins

Description: This talk will discuss what food sovereignty is, why it is important to community health and environmental justice, and how to get involved in local food sovereignty efforts in Fort Collins.

Bio: Lindsey is the Programs Assistant at The Growing Project, a food and social justice nonprofit in Fort Collins, CO. They have dual degrees in Social Work and Languages, Literatures and Cultures with a concentration in Spanish from Colorado State University. At The Growing Project, Lindsey stewards community growing spaces and facilitates bilingual (Spanish-English) programming and community outreach to folks of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Hadley Seavey, Environmental Learning for Kids

Title: The Way of ELK

Description: The speech I will be giving is going to be about everything Environmental Learning for Kids has taught me as a nonprofit. I will be talking about how ELK allows everyone to have an opportunity to participate in outdoor activities and how they make it fun and easy.

Bio: Some things that you should know about me are that I was born in New Jersey but moved to Colorado when I was seven. I have been in the outdoors since I can remember. My family has always loved the outdoors. I’m currently studying Forensic Psychology at the Community College of Aurora however I am transferring to CU Denver this spring. I’m 20 years old.
