Volunteer for a Better Future

Earth Day 2020 Contest for Students

Who will have the biggest impact in our community?

Earth Day encourages and inspires community members to honor the Earth EVERY DAY and make efforts toward conservation and preservation of our wondrous planet for current and future generations. The goal of Earth Day is to inspire and motivate citizens to live more in balance with nature by conserving natural resources and leaving less of an impact on the earth.

April is National Volunteer Month and this year, we’re encouraging all students to make our community a better place through volunteerism.

Step 1: Volunteer and track your hours.

Step 2: Submit your hours here.

It’s that easy.

Now you’re entered to compete and win prizes.

This year, we’re hosting a Volunteer for a Better Future Earth Day contest and we invite all students to join us. Who can do the MOST volunteer work in our community in one month? All students are eligible to participate regardless of which school they attend, or if they are homeschooled or not currently enrolled. The winning schools will not only have amazing bragging rights, but they may also win $500 for a sustainability project of their choice!

Thank you to all students who accept the challenge to improve our community through volunteer work! We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

And thank you in advance to any educators, parents, or friends out there who help spread the word and support the students in their volunteer efforts!

Rules:

  1. The contest will be held from March 13 – April 13, 2020. Only volunteer hours completed during the contest will be counted. Winners will be announced on stage at Earth Day Fort Collins on April 18th in Civic Center Park.
  2. Participants must be between the ages of 5 and 19.
  3. Students may work alone or in a group on any sustainability-related project of their choice. Students may come up with a project on their own or find an organization to volunteer with on the United Way of Larimer County’s website: https://impact.uwaylc.org/Volunteer/QuickSearch.jsp. Students may also pick a “Service To Go” project detailed here: https://uwaylc.org/Service-To-Go.  More ideas for specific places to volunteer can also be found below.
  4. Volunteer projects must have some sustainability component to them.
  5. Student(s) must track their volunteer hours to be submitted online, including who you volunteered for. Students are also required to submit a brief description of the nature of the project and how it relates to sustainability, as well as the outcome of the work. Hours recorded will be based on an honor system.
  6. Description of the work and the student’s recorded hours are due by 11:59pm on Monday, April 13th.  Late submissions will not be considered. Hours will only count if the volunteer work was performed from March 13-April 13th
  7. Submissions must be submitted via the online form on our website www.EarthDayFortCollins.com. Images of the volunteer work will also be accepted via email to amy@sustainablelivingassociation.org.

Selection of Winners:

There are two ways for schools to win:

  • Highest percentage of students that participate in the contest from any given school
  • Highest average number of hours per student that participates
  • Prizes will also be given to high performing students

Prizes:

In addition to immense bragging rights, the winning school(s) will be granted a traveling trophy that they can proudly display until next year’s contest. Winners will be announced on stage at Earth Day Fort Collins on April 18th in Civic Center Park.
Participants will be sent more details on timing after April 13th.

Winning schools will also be given $500 from the Sustainable Living Association to put towards a sustainability project of their choice at their school.  We ask that you notify us of the project and when it’s completed send us the details along with photos so we can share your success in our enewsletter.
